ZAGREB DECLARATION ON CLIMATE CHANGE AND THE IMPACT OF SPECIALIST NURSES
The European Specialist Nurses Organisation (ESNO) has officially released the Zagreb Declaration on Climate Change and the Impact of Specialist Nurses, adopted during the 7th ESNO Congress in May 2025. The declaration recognizes that climate change has shifted from prediction to lived reality, reshaping health, equity, and the conditions for life across Europe. As frontline providers, specialist nurses are increasingly confronted with climate-sensitive diseases, ecological disruption, and growing inequalities—placing them at the centre of the response to this global health emergency.
The Zagreb Declaration outlines clear commitments to strengthen nursing education, expand research on planetary health, and accelerate the transformation of healthcare systems toward sustainability and climate resilience. It calls for enhanced cross-sector collaboration, stronger policy engagement, and the integration of climate science, One Health principles, and environmental stewardship into all levels of nursing practice. ESNO emphasizes that safeguarding both human and planetary health requires united action, political awareness, and moral responsibility.
